The Top 5 Things to Do Before Moving Day (That Most People Forget)

At Solomon Moving, we’ve handled hundreds of moves — and we’ve seen it all. While most people remember to pack boxes and book movers, there are a few small but crucial tasks that often get overlooked. Here are five things to do before moving day to avoid last-minute stress:
1.
Label Boxes Clearly — and Specifically
Instead of writing “Kitchen” or “Bedroom” on every box, try labeling with more detail like “Kitchen – Cutlery & Coffee Supplies” or “Master Bedroom – Nightstand Essentials.” This saves you time when unpacking and helps movers know where to place things.
2.
Take Photos of Important Setups
Before you unplug your TV, Wi-Fi router, or computer setup, snap a quick photo. These photos will help you reconnect everything easily in your new home — without trial and error.
3.
Pack an Essentials Box
The first night in your new home can feel chaotic. Pack a separate box or bag with essentials: toiletries, chargers, basic kitchen tools, pajamas, a change of clothes, and important documents. Keep it with you, not on the moving truck.
4.
Defrost Your Fridge & Freezer
If you’re moving your refrigerator, unplug and defrost it at least 24 hours in advance. Place towels underneath to catch water and keep the doors propped open to prevent mold.
5.
Notify Key Services & Update Your Address
It sounds simple, but it’s easy to forget. Make sure to update your address with banks, insurance providers, subscriptions, and Canada Post. Also, cancel or transfer utilities in advance — internet, hydro, gas, and water.
